About Us
Cartakeback.com was formed by 11 UK shredder operators in response to the End of Life Vehicle Directive. The Directive was introduced with the aims of improving the recyclability of vehicles, and ensuring that re-use, recycling and recovery rates of end of life vehicles increased.
The 11 UK Shredders have sufficient capacity to recycle the expected 2 million end of life vehicles each year and have established de-pollution facilities at their own sites and recruited more than 200 additional ATFs. The Cartakeback network has developed across the UK and today provides coverage in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland which surpasses the government criteria for accessibility for last owners as laid down for vehicle manufacturers under the ELV regulations. Cartakeback has in place exclusive contracts to provide this accessibility criteria with vehicle manufacturers who are responsible for over 70% of vehicles on the road. These manufacturers are Alfa Romeo, Aston Martin, Audi, Bentley, Bugatti, Citroën, Fiat, Ford, Hyundai, Iveco, Jaguar, Lamborghini, Lancia, Land Rover, LDV, Lotus, Mitsubishi, Mazda , MG, Nissan, Perodua, Peugeot, Proton, Renault, Renault Trucks, Rover, Seat, Skoda, Tatra, Volkswagen & Volvo.
The Directive sets a recycling target from 1st January 2006 of 85% by weight re-use and recovery and 80% re-use and recycling. This target will increase to 95% re-use and recovery and 90% re-use and recycling from the 1st January 2015. The shortfall between the current level of recycling and the 2006 target level will be derived from the recovery and recycling of fluids, glass, plastic and rubber as well as the re-use of parts.
Techniques already exist to recover, recycle & re-use some of the above materials and research into post shredder segregation is ongoing. It will be assumed that 75% of each vehicle is recycled for the metallic content, with a further 1% protocol for fuel, therefore ATFs must collate data to prove that an additional 9% of each vehicle processed has been recycled.
Members of the Cartakeback network are working with other companies in the recycling industry to ensure that the 85% target will be achieved from 2006.
